Making more of every tree

SCA Cirrus brings together the products and energy we recover during kraft pulp production. These include tall oil, a wood-based raw material for biodiesel production, as well as turpentine, district heating and renewable electricity.

Tall oil

We produce about 30 000 tons/year of tall oil (2021), comprising various wood substances extracted from the black liquor. The substance is derived from the resins and is also a renewable raw material for making bio-diesel.

Turpentine

Turpentine is recovered through the kraft (sulphate) process, with approximately 1,200 tons produced in 2021. It contains compounds derived from the essential oils naturally present in wood, which can be used to manufacture perfumes, cosmetics and flavorings for food and beverages, including liqueurs, soft drinks, pastries and sweets.

District heating

An important Cirrus product is district heating, which is produced by excess heat from the pulp processes - that are exchanged with the district heating networks in Timrå and Sundsvall municipality.

SCA delivers approximately 300 GWh of heat on an annual basis to the district heating networks in Timrå and Sundsvall, which corresponds to the heating of about 20,000 households.

Renewable electricity

Our kraft pulp mill in Timrå generates more electricity than it consumes. Its turbines produce 1.0 TWh per year, equivalent to approximately 1% of Sweden’s annual electricity consumption. Of this, we supply around 600 GWh to the Swedish grid each year, roughly equivalent to the output of a large hydropower plant.
